and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de
Monterrey - Campus Querétaro Academic Cooperation and Exchange
Program
The Academic Cooperation and Exchange Program between the UT Institute
of Agriculture (UTIA), The University of Tennessee at Knoxville
(UTK) and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores
de Monterrey - Campus Querétaro (ITESM - CQ)
was initiated
in December, 1999. Initially the exchange agreement concerned exchange
between the Food Science Departments at ITESM-CQ and the UTIA. However,
with renewal of the agreement in December, 2002, efforts were expanded
to broaden the number of participating UTIA departments, emphasizing
an overall agribusiness approach. The CQ is one of
33 campuses within
the ITESM system, a nationally respected academic and research private
institution in Mexico. The CQ is mainly an undergraduate, academic
campus, although some faculty participate in research. Therefore,
most of the exchanges revolve around students.
The agreement evolved from the desire of all parties to enhance
furtherance of scholastic and scholarly opportunity for academic
collaboration, exchange and research, and the encouragement of mutual
understanding of each country's cultural, social and agribusiness
interests. The exchange
program revolves around the potential activities of informal study
tours, exchange of students for enrollment, exchange of faculty,
exchange of student internships, exchange of educational programs
and teaching aids, and collaboration on research programs. To date,
the greatest activity has
been 10- to 14-day biennial study tours of the Mexican agribusiness
industry, and exchange of summer interns. Under the renewed agreement,
and with US government approval, both CQ and UTIA students can work
for companies in their guest countries. To date, 12 CQ students
have interned in UT department laboratories and in a food company.
Seven UTIA students have interned with Mexican food companies, and
46 UTIA students and faculty have participated in three study tours.
Several years ago, UTIA faculty presented a HACCP, food safety-related,
workshop for the Mexican food industry in conjunction with CQ. Currently,
discussions are underway for potential joint offering of a course
via distance education using the Web and joint research projects
between CQ, UTIA and the University of Querétaro.
