April 27, Thursday 11:40 pm Group arrives on United 1818 from Chicago. Taken to Hampton Inn, North 
April 28, Friday (casual dress). 6:00 - 10:00 am Continental breakfast (no charge) in hotel lobby.  11:00 am Walking tour of area around hotel.


Noon: Picnic lunch on University of Tennessee Agricultural Campus 1:30 pm Driving tour of Institute of Agriculture, University of Tennessee Main Campus and Knoxville. 3:30 Return to hotel. 6:00 pm Depart hotel for dinner at Mandarin House Chinese Buffet Following dinner, group taken to West Town Mall.

 

April 29, Saturday (casual dress). 11:30 am Depart hotel for lunch.12:30 pm Visit the Knoxville Zoo. 3:30 Return to hotel for rest. 6:15 Depart for welcoming party at home of Dr. Kelly Robbins (casual dress)


April 30, Sunday (casual dress) 9:30 am Depart hotel for Museum of Appalachia.  Noon Picnic at Norris Dam.  Proceed to Norris Lake cabin of Dr. Frank Leuthold, Professor of Rural Sociology. This is Dr. Leuthold's final day of service to University of Tennessee. 
Boating. Cookout dinner at Dr. Leuthold's cabin. Return to hotel in early evening.

 

May 1, Monday 8:30 am Depart hotel for Institute of Agriculture (dress formally). 9:00 Welcome; orientation. Overview Institute of Agriculture & UT. 10:00 Presentation on history, culture, religion of Southern Appalachian/Tennessee region by Dr. Bruce Wheeler, Professor of History. 11:00 Southern Appalachian Story (in Thai language) historical perspective on East Tennessee and region. Noon: Lunch hosted by Dr. Tom Klindt, Interim Dean, Agricultural Experiment Station.
1:15 pm Sit in on a class--this is the final day of classes for the Spring Semester. 2:30 Visit University Center, Bookstore. 3:30 Return to hotel. 5:15 pm Depart hotel for dinner (casual dress) at Calhoun's hosted by Dr. Mary Lewnes Albrecht, Interim Dean, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.  Evening:  Laundry!!


May 2, Tuesday (dress formally) 8:30 am Depart hotel for College of Human Ecology. Overview of College. Visit TANDEC, an industry-sponsored specialized research unit for non-woven textiles. Nutrition laboratories, including the rat labs. Kitchens used in hotel/restaurant program. Child care facilities. Noon: Lunch hosted by College of Human Ecology.
1:30 pm Tour of University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) research facilities in Plant and Soil Sciences featuring Geographic Information Systems 
3:00  Tour of Animal Science Research Building 4:00 Tour of Food Safety Laboratories 5:45 pm Depart hotel for dinner hosted by Dr. Jack Britt, Vice President for Agriculture (casual dress)

 

May 3, Wednesday Note: casual dress for remainder of visit, unless told otherwise. 8:30 am Check out of hotel. 9:00 Depart for Sequoyah Museum, Native American museum in Loudon County. 11:30 Lunch.

 

 

1:00 pm Tour Sweetwater Valley Farm Cheese Company. 2:30 Tour Monterey Mushroom Company. Check into Cedar Lodge, Clyde York 4H Center near Crossville, TN


May 4, Thursday Visit Tennessee State University Nursery Crops Research Station at McMinville for a full day program with Mr. Mark Holcombe, Area Specialist. Return to Clyde York 4H Center. 


May 5, Friday 10:45 Visit Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga. Noon: Lunch at nearby restaurant Pm Visit Tennessee Valley Authority Raccoon Valley power facility near Chattanooga. Return to Clyde York 4H Center


May 6, Saturday am free pm Falls Creek Falls State Park. Hiking. Waterfall. Return to Clyde York 4H Center.

 

 

May 7, Sunday 9:30 am Travel to Ames Plantation (5 1/2 hours). Visit Pinson Mounds State Archeological Park--site of prehistoric Native American society.
Dinner: Dr. Don Tyler will host the group for dinner at his home. Check into Ames Plantation in evening.

 

May 8, Monday am Introduction to Ames Plantation Tour. pm 1/2 day forestry/wildlife research activity for the group.


May 9, Tuesday 8:15 am Depart for introduction to Jackson Experiment Station. Overview of Station by Dr. Jim Brown, Station Superintendent. Covered trailer tour of station with Dr. Don Tyler, featuring conservation tillage and vegetable production. 
Noon: Lunch hosted by Dr. Brown pm Travel to Milan Experiment Station. Overview with Dr. Blake Brown, Station Superintendent. Precision agriculture. Return to Ames Plantation.


May 10, Wednesday Rice research and production/University of Missouri Delta Research Station in Portageville, Missouri with Dr. Don Tyler and Dr. Gene Stevens. Return to Ames Plantation 


 
May 11, Thursday am Travel to Memphis. Visit to an Sparks International, an agri-business consulting firm 1:00 pm- Tour Cargill, Inc., Corn Milling Division. Return to Ames Plantation at end of day. 


May 12, Friday 10:30 am Swine tour in Jackson. 2:30 pm Tour Tyson Chickens facility in Union City, TN. Dinner Catfish dinner at Reelfoot Lake State Park. Return to Ames Plantation at end of day. 
May 13, Saturday am Late departure for Memphis. Beale Street. Mississippi River. Ribs. Return to Ames Plantation at end of day. 
May 14, Sunday am Late departure for 4-H camp in Columbia, TN.
May 15, Monday 9:00 am Middle Tennessee Experiment Station at Spring Hill. Overview and tour of beef, dairy, row crops and horticulture program. 11:15 Catered lunch. Afternoon: Tennessee Walking Horse farm tour. Return to 4-H camp in Columbia, TN.


May 16, Tuesday am Farm Bureau in Columbia. 1:00 pm Ellington Campus in Nashville for Tennessee Department of Agriculture (including Extension and Agriculture Museum). Program overview of regulatory services, forestry, water quality, state veterinarian and laboratory tour. Return to 4-H camp in Columbia, TN.

 

May 17, Wednesday 10:00 am Backdoor tour of Opryland Hotel with Mr. Hollis Malone, Director of Horticulture.
 
1:30 pm Holtkamp Greenhouse (violet flower operation) in Nashville. 3:30 Belle Meade Plantation Dinner Wild Horse Saloon (country "culture"). 


May 18, Thursday Am Free.
3:00 pm Special 2-hour tour of Saturn Corporation (automobile manufacturers) 

 

May 19, Friday am Travel to Knoxville with stop at Lynchburg's Jack Daniels Distillery pm Afternoon arrival. Stay at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel for the single evening. Dinner at the home of Pisespong Patamasucon, MD, UT Medical Center with visiting delegation of KU administrators.

 

May 20, Saturday 10:00 am Check out of hotel and join host families.


May 21, Sunday 4:30 pm Join host families at the Alan Mathew farm for pig roast, serious cow-petting. Return home with host families.

 

May 22, Monday 8:30 am Depart  for Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cades Cove.  Hike to Laurel Falls. Return home with host families.

 

May 23, Tuesday 8:30 am Depart for Grainger County,  with County Agent, Charlie Cavin.  Visit commercial  tomato producers.  Lunch will be hosted by Mr. And Mrs. Cavin at their home.  "Experience" Narrow Ridge--a Utopian environmental community.
May 24, Wednesday 8:30 am Engage in an agricultural research or extension experience. Return home with host families.


May 25, Thursday 8:30 am Depart the Agricultural Campus for shopping at Pigeon Forge Factory Outlet Malls. Return home with host families.


May 26, Friday 8:45 - 9:00 am Say, "Goodbye" to host families. Bring packed luggage. Program concluding remarks at the Agricultural Campus. Noon: Following lunch, check into Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel for final night. pm Grocery shopping. Food preparation.


6:30 pm Thank-you party by KU Students at home of Dr. Bob Orr. Will include a Thai cultural program.

 

May 27, Saturday 8:15 - 8:45 am Check out of hotel. 8:45 Load vans. 9:00 Depart for airport. 10:42 Depart for Thailand (United 287 to Chicago)
