Morning:  walking tour of UT Campus and area around hotel
Afternoon:  Driving tour of Knoxville and Dogwood Trail. 
Evening:  Welcome party at home of Dr. Robert Orr, Professor and International Coordinator
April 22, Sunday
 Visit Norris, Tennessee.  Norris Dam and picnic lunch at Norris Lake State Park, Museum of Appalachia.  Dinner at #1 Chinese Buffet.
April 23, Monday
Morning:  Introductory meeting and orientation with Dr. Jack Britt, Vice President for Agriculture and other administrators in the Institute of Agriculture. Courtesy meeting with President of the University of Tennessee.  Lunch at the University Club hosted by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.

Afternoon:  Geographic Information Systems field demonstration (a major component of the KU-UT collaborative research program in precision agriculture) with Dr. John Wilkerson, Associate Professor of Agricultural Engineering, and Dr. Paul Denton, Extension of Soil Science.  Dinner:  Hosted by Dr. Britt at Calhoun's on the River.  

 

April 24, Tuesday
Visit the College of Human Ecology.  Overview of the College with the Dean, Dr. Jim Moran and administrators and faculty.  Visit TANDEC, an industry-sponsored, specialized research unit for non-woven textiles.  Visit nutrition laboratories, including the rat labs.  Kitchens used in the hotel/restaurant program.  Visit child care facilities.  Lunch and dinner hosted by the College.

 

April 25, Wednesday
Morning:  Tour Institute of Agriculture research facilities in food safety with Dr. Alan Mathew, Associate Professor in Animal Science.  Presentation on cloning technology with Dr. Lannett Edwards, Research Assistant Professor in Animal Science.  Visit Millie, the cloned calf with Dr. Kelly.  Lunch hosted by Department of Animal Science.

Afternoon:  Go to class/hang out with UT students [that will be going to Thailand in June.]  Dinner hosted by Department of Food Science and Technology.

 

April 26, Thursday
Visit Sequoyah Museum, a museum honoring a famous Native American.  Tour Sweetwater Valley Farm Cheese Company and dairy.  Tour Monterey Mushroom Company.  Dinner in Knoxville:  hosted by the Department of Plant and Soil Science. 

 

April 27, Friday--Grainger County Day
Grainger County, Tennessee with Kaset Amphur, Mr. Charles Cavin.  Visit tomato and flower greenhouses and packing facilities.  Lunch at Mr. Cavin's home.  Dinner:  hosted by the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.
 

April 28, Saturday
Visit the Chattanooga I-Max Theatre and the Tennessee Aquarium

 

April 29, Sunday
Free time in morning with afternoon shopping at mall.  Evening:  dinner at Dr. Kelly's home.

 

April 30, Monday
Travel to Crossville, Tennessee, accompanied by Dr. Kelly Robbins and Dr. Paul Denton..  Visit District Extension Office with Mr. John Jared.  See area vegetable production with Dr. Walt Hitch at the Plateau Research Station.  On to the Clyde York 4-H Camp.


May 1, Tuesday
Crossville 4-H Camp and ornamentals in Middle Tennessee.

 

May 2, Wednesday
Travel to Nashville area.  Visit Middle Tennessee Experiment Station.  Hosted for lunch by Dr. Dennis Onks, Station Superintendent.  Tour of station facilities, its prawn pond, fruit orchards and vegetable production areas.  Tour nearby Saturn automobile assembly plant.   
Dinner hosted by Dr. Dennis and June Onks at their home.
May 3, Thursday
Morning:  Visit historic Belle Meade Plantation.

Afternoon:  Visit Ellington Center, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture.  Overview of regulator service division and tour of Kord Laboratories, followed by visit to the agricultural museum.

 

May 4, Friday
Morning:  Visit to walking horse farm.

 

Afternoon:  Horticultural tour of Opryland Hotel, followed by shopping at Opry Mills Mall.  

Evening:  Dining at Thai restaurant in downtown Nashville and shopping.

 

May 5, Saturday
Morning:  Laundry
Afternoon:  Travel to Jackson, Tennessee.  Dr. Dan McLemore, Department Head in Agricultural Economics and Dr. Clark Brekke, Department Head in Food Science and Technology trade off driving chores with Dr. Kelly and Dr. Bob.
Dinner:  at the home of Dr. Don Tyler, Professor of Soil Science near Jackson.  On to Ames Plantation.

 

May 6, Sunday
Drive to Memphis for the Beale Street Music Festival.  Return to Ames Plantation.

 

May 7, Monday
Travel to Memphis to Visit Sparks International (agricultural consulting firm) and Smuckers Canning Company.  Return to Ames Plantation at end of day.

 

May 8, Tuesday
Ames Plantation Tour with Dr. Allan Houston.  Look at historical interpretive work conducted at the station, as well as its forestry and wildlife research projects. Dr. Paul Denton (you already met Dr. Paul) and Dr. Mike Mullen, Associate Professor of Soil Science trade off driving chores with Dr. Dan and Dr. Clark.  Evening at Ames Plantation.

 

May 9, Wednesday
Morning:  Introduction to West Tennessee Experiment Station at Jackson with Dr. Don Tyler and Station Superintendent, Dr. Jim Brown.  
Afternoon:  Travel to Milan Experiment Station.  Overview by Dr. Blake Brown, Station Superintendent.  Discuss precision agriculture and no-till agriculture.  Evening at Ames Plantation.

 

May 10, Thursday
Morning:  Tour Tyson Chickens processing plant in Union City, Tennessee.  

Afternoon:  Kaset Amphur, Mr. Ken Goddard of Henry County joins the group.  Visit the Kristopher Gulish beef cattle farm near Paris, Tennessee.  

 

May 11, Friday
Morning:  Tour Land Between the Lakes conservation area.  Visit Clifty Farm Company processing hams.

Lunch:  with Paris Chamber of Commerce.  Special ceremony. 

Afternoon:  Visit Tosh Farms contract swine production operation. Tour Digg's Farm with conservation tillage and a diversified cropping program.  
Evening:  Pot luck dinner at 1st Presbyterian Church with parents and youth group.
May 12, Saturday and May 13, Sunday
Return to Knoxville.  Join with host families.
May 14, Monday
Visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Sugarland Visitor Center.  Hike to Laurel Falls.  Accompanied by Dr. Gary Schneider, Professor Emeritus.

 

May 15, Tuesday
A day in the lab and electro-fishing with Dr. Larry Wilson, Professor of Fisheries.  Lunch hosted by the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries.

 

May 16, Wednesday
Students break into small groups doing field activities with different departments.

 

May 17, Thursday
Morning and Afternoon:  Shopping at the Pigeon Forge factory outlet malls.  Lunch hosted by Dr. Bob and Donna Orr.  
Evening:  Dinner and baseball game at the Smokies.  
May 18, Friday
Wrap-up meeting.  Lunch at the Trial Gardens.  
Farewell party and KU cultural performance at the home of Dr. Kelly and Regina Robbins.

 

May 19, Saturday
9:52 am  United flight #1143 departed Knoxville for Chicago and on and on.
