KU-UTIA Student Exchange Program

KU Students at the University of Tennessee - 2004

This was the fifth year of the student exchange program.  As in previous years, the KU students began their adventure at an orientation/accelerated English camp at Khao Yai National Park a couple of weeks prior to coming to Tennessee.  This year, we have included these photos, as well as photos of the travel to Tennessee. 

 

April 16-18, a weekend of pre-departure intensive English-language study and team-building exercises at Khao Yai National Park

 

 

 
April 22, Thursday--the longest day departing Bangkok early in the morning and arriving in Knoxville more than 24 hours later.  All on the same day.  Check into Hess Hall

 

April 23,  Friday
Morning:  Campus walking tour

Afternoon:  Driving tour of Knoxville and Dogwood Trail. 

 

April 24, Saturday
Museum of Appalachia and Norris Dam
Welcome party at program Co-Director Dr. Kelly Robbins' home.

 

April 25, Sunday
Great Smoky Mountains National Park .

 

More of our day in the Smokies.
April 26, Monday
Morning:  Introduction to the Institute of Agriculture.  Lunch hosted by the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
Afternoon:  Ag Vet-Med Library.  Ag Communication and Extension. 
Dinner:  Hosted by the Vice President of Agriculture, Dr. Jack Britt.

 

April 27, Tuesday
Morning: Animal Science cloning research and a farm visit with Dr. Alan Mathew. 
Afternoon:  An introduction to GPS and precision agriculture, and a tour of the Innovative Technology Center

 

April 28, Wednesday
Morning:  College of Veterinary Medicine tour with Associate Dean Brace.
Afternoon:  Tour of downtown Knoxville with the Department of Consumer Services Management.  Dinner hosted by the Department.

 

April 29, Thursday
Field trip to Big South Fork National Riverine and Recreation Area with Dr. Mark Fly.  Dinner at Dr. Fly's home.

 

April 30, Friday
Morning:  Visit Stephanie Tarwater's beekeeping operation--Bakers Creek Honey Farms.
 Afternoon:  Jimmy Lane's greenhouses and Pope's Plant Farm.
 

Dinner at Parci Gibson's home.
May 1, Saturday
Laundry morning and playing in the park with UT students.

Dinner at home of Dr. Forbes and Amelia Walker.

 

May 2, Sunday
A day at Dr. Frank Leuthold's cabin on Norris Lake.

 

May 3, Monday
Morning:  Check out of Hess Hall.  Introduction to biotechnology research at U.
Afternoon:  Take "ice cream" tour of Mayfield's Dairy in Athens, TN.  M&M Candy manufacturing in Cleveland.  Travel to Chattanooga. 

 

May 4, Tuesday in Chattanooga.
Morning: Visit Ace Hardware and NK Garden Seed Company.
Afternoon: Tennessee Aquarium. Travel on to Shelbyville.

 

May 5, Wednesday
Morning: Waterfall Farm and Tennessee walking horses.
Afternoon:  Tour Jack Daniel's distillery and shop for Jack Daniel's memorabilia in historic Lynchburg. 

 

Evening:  Dinner hosted by the Shelbyville 4-H Club.
May 6 Thursday
Morning:  Depart Shelbyville.  Tour Spring Hill Experiment Station.
Afternoon:  Tour Saturn auto assembly plant.  Arrive in Nashville. 

 

May 7, Friday
Morning:  Visit State Capitol Building and Governor's Office.

Afternoon:  Visit the Tennessee Department of Agriculture and Kord Laboratories.  Dinner at Kim's home.

 

May 8,  Saturday
Morning:  Visit the Hermitage.
Afternoon:  Tour the Opryland Hotel and shop at Opryland Mills.
Evening:  dinner, billiards and dancing at the Wildhorse Saloon.

 

May 9, Sunday
Morning:  Adventures at the laundramat.
Afternoon:  Drive to Jackson, Tennessee, visiting Pinson Mounds State Park and dinner at the home of Dr. Don Tyler. Check in at Ames Plantation.

 

May 10,  Monday
Travel to Memphis.  Botanical Gardens.  Visit Elvis Presley's Graceland Mansion.
Return to Ames Plantation.

 

May 11, Tuesday
Introduction to Ames Plantation.  Archeological restorations.  Quail and hunting dogs. 

 

May 12, Wednesday
Morning: Check out off Ames Plantation.  Visit West Tennessee Experiment Station.
Afternoon:  Tour Milan [no-till] Experiment Station. Stay at Camp Clark Williamson's lodge.

 

May 13,  Thursday
Morning:  Tour of Greenwater Fish Farm.
Afternoon:  Travel to Knoxville and handoff to host families. 

 

May 14, Friday
Morning:  Watershed and water quality research nears Athens with Dr. Forbes Walker.
Afternoon:  Visit West Winds Technologies bamboo operation in Athens.

May 15-16, Saturday & Sunday
weekend activities with host families.

May 17, Monday
Day of hard-core shopping at the factory outlet stores of Pigeon Forge and Sevierville.
May 18, Tuesday
Morning:  Visits to Processed Foods Corp. and Tom's, food processing companies in Knoxville with Dr. Clark Brekke.
Afternoon:  Electro-fishing with Dr. Larry Wilson.

 

May 19, Wednesday
Morning:  Wrap-up meeting.  Lunch hosted by Professor Sandra Leach.
Afternoon: Final rehearsal for farewell party.
Evening:  Dinner and farewell party at the home of Dr. Robert Orr with cultural performance by the KU students.

May 20, Thursday
Fly home.
